We are thrilled to announce the winners of the 2015 Facing History Together Student & Alumni Upstander Scholarship Contest.

Shireen Afzal - Upstander Contest Winner

Shireen Afzal

Woburn Collegiate Institute
Toronto, Canada

Shireen Afzal, a student at Woburn Collegiate Institute in Toronto, Ontario, will receive a $2,500 scholarship for her essay, “One Word at a Time.” Her entry, which attracted impressive support, concerns both past and contemporary injustice. As Shireen notes “you can't just label an event as a tragedy and walk away; you have to confront it, strip away the complex layers of motives and causes in the hopes that you will become closer to understanding what lies at the core of humanity.”
