We are thrilled to announce the winner of the 2014 Facing History Together Teacher Recognition Contest. A math teacher at Charlestown High School in Boston, Massachusetts, Hayden Frederick-Clarke will receive our grand prize — a $5,000 grant to benefit his school and community and to further his work as a great educator. His work demonstrates the crucial impact educators have on the lives of their students and our communities as a whole.
We were blown away by the support for Hayden, starting with the nomination from a colleague:
He challenges all of his students to own their learning and to demand understanding. He has a beautiful way of teaching math — through history, through the human experience, through what is happening in the students' communities.
In addition to helping them build their skills and grow their knowledge in the classroom, Mr. Frederick also engages them in real-world learning. For example, he led students in a peaceful demonstration honoring the life of Michael Brown in the Boston Commons in September. He uses what is happening in the world to engage students in the work of speaking out against hatred and injustice.
Tell Hayden Frederick-Clarke how much you appreciate teachers like him.
